Why renting a kimono when you can rent a hakama?

Good evening everyone !!

Today we decided to share pictures from the Kyoto Tower Formal Store and discuss about hakama!

You might not be familiar with the word but might have seen some before. Hakama are typically worn by Japanese people for their graduation ceremony and also to practice certain sports. (especially martial arts) ^^

I bet the fan of the anime Chihayafuru knows what I am talking about. (The story is about a girl that decide to play karuta cards competitively dressed in hakama most of the time!)

Let’s make it easy. You probably wonder what is the main difference with a regular kimono? The shape! And also the fact that it’s two pieces; a top part and a pair of wide pants.

The word ”hakama” itself is a designation for the pleated skirt-like pants combined with a ”nishoku-sode” kimono top as you can see on the picture. They used to be official school uniform during the Meiji Era. Nowadays, because not adapted to everyday life on a preparation time and movement point of view, students wear them as a tradition for their graduation ceremony in memories of the Ancient Japan. Graduating foreign students are also welcome to use them! ^^
