Recommended Spots in Sapporo, Interesting and Fun Events to See in August

In recent years, it’s well known that the temperature in summer has been getting hotter each year. And it’s no exception in Japan, most of the cities would get really hot during summer. Therefore Sapporo is a popular destination for summer domestic travel, where you can spend a comfortable summer while you are in Japan. And there are a lot of outdoor events! So, this time we would like to introduce some events to go to while wearing yukata in Sapporo this August!
 

Sapporo August Festival

Date: August 9-10, 2019
Time: 9th (Fri) 14:30-21:30 and 10th (Sat) 12:00-20:45
Place: Kita Sanjo Plaza, Sapporo (Kita-Nijo-Nishi 4-Chome ~ Kita-Sanjo-Nishi 4-Chome, Chuo-ku, Sapporo-shi)

The 5th Sapporo August Festival would extend from Hokkaido Government Office to Sapporo Kita-Sanjo Plaza. Although this event is still quite new, the Bon dance (Bon Odori) performance on the road covered by the large furoshiki, has attracted more than 25,000 visitors. Live music played in the background attracts the visitors to jump in and participate to dance. Come and wear yukata to this event and make sure to participate in the Bon dance!
 

Hokkaido Marathon

Date: August 25, 2019

Place: [Start]: Between Odori Park 3-Chome and 4-Chome [Goal]: Odori Park 8-Chome
 

Hokkaido Marathon, the only marathon event held in summer in Japan. It’s like a dream for runners to be able to run in a big city with lots of greenery and a large audience in the clear air beneath the clear sky. This tournament had less than 500 participants in the first tournament of 1987, however, it is now a very large marathon event with 20,000 participants now! The starting point and the ending point are also located in the center of Sapporo city, so come and see this event in yukata, and give your support to the runners in this unusual summer marathon.
 

Sosei River Candle Stream

Date: September 13 ~ September 28, 2019
Time: 13th (Fri) 18:30~ and 28th (Sat) 18:00~
Place: Soseigawa Park Minami Ni-jo Event Plaza

Last year, Sosei River Candle Stream was held in August, but unfortunately, this year’s event was changed to September. Candle stream is an event where 5,000 balloons with LED candles inside are flowing through the Sosei River surface at night! It’s so fantastic, and it is definitely a must-see event for girls! It is recommended for a yukata date♡ The candle stream itself is an event only for the last day, but the illumination lights up every night during the period, and it is wonderful to look at this from the Sapporo TV observatory tower.
 

Sapporo City Jazz

Date: July 7 ~ August 25, 2019
Time: (For June-August) 19:00～21:00
Place: Sapporo Citizens Cultural Exchange Plaza, Sapporo City Education and Culture Center, Sapporo Art Park Outdoor Stage, etc.
 

About 150,000 visitors! Sapporo City Jazz is the largest jazz festival in Japan, held twice a year in summer and winter. The main event in August is the North Jam session held at the Sapporo Art Park Outdoor Stage on the 25th. You can dress up in yukata and see the jazz parade where 200 people gather in Sapporo Ekimae street, the sound of jazz will surely resonate through the city.
 

Sapporo Ramen Republic

Date: June 22 ~ August 18, 2019

Many people associate Hokkaido with “Ramen”. In Hokkaido where the climate is cool and comfortable, ramen is very delicious in summer too! We are sure that there are a lot of tourists who want to eat ramen even though they’ll get a little sweaty ^^ In the Sapporo Ramen Republic, not only Miso Ramen of Sapporo, but also Salt Ramen of Hakodate, Soy Sauce Ramen of Asahikawa and other famous ramen are gathered in one place, and limited summer menu has appeared as well. It seems that some shops also offer shaved ice/kakigori, so people who don’t like to get sweaty can order them too.
 

Summary of the Events Held in Sapporo this August

How was it? There are many large fireworks and festivals in summer in Sapporo, however, there are many events in the fields of music and sports that are worth mentioning.
