Gozan no Okuribi (Daimonji Festival)

It is a famous traditional event of Kyoto, a celebration during the height of the Obon festival where the city’s surrounding mountains are lit up with five bonfires shaped like Kanji letters and symbols. It is considered to be one of the four major events in Kyoto along with the Aoi-matsuri Festival, Gion Matsuri and Jidai Matsuri. On the evening of August 16th every year, giant bonfires are lit calmly on five mountains. Those mountains are: Mt. Daimonji, Mt. Hidari Daimonji, Mt. Mantoro & Mt. Daikokuten, Mt. Funayama, and Mt. Mandara.
The bonfire that lit up above five mountains serve as guides, and the spirit of the dead is sent to “that world”. On the day of the Gozan Bonfire, it’s predicted to be really crowded, to the point where numbered-tickets will be distributed at the Kyoto Station Building, so it is a good idea to decide in advance where do you want to see the fire from.
